Who are Adolescent Sex Offenders?

Juveniles commit a great number of sexual assaults against children in this country. The reason adolescents commit sexual offenses can be linked to numerous factors such as their experiences (i.e. victims of sexual or emotional abuse), exposure (i.e. pornography or observation of sexual intercourse of others), and/or developmental deficits. Research shows that meaningful differences can be made between youth who target peers or adults and those who target children. Additionally, juveniles who sexually offend are distinct from their adult counterparts.

It is estimated that juveniles commit almost half of all child molestation and about 20% of all rapes. Adolescents, between the ages of 13 and 17, account for the majority of cases of rape and child molestation by teenagers. The vast majority of juvenile sexual aggression involves male perpetrators. Other studies show that prepubescent children including females are engaging in sexually abusive behavior. Juveniles referred for treatment reflect the same racial, religious, and socioeconomic distribution as the general population in America.

Causes of Adolescent Sex Offenders Behavior

Developmental and environmental factors appear to play the most important role in shaping the expression of sexual needs and in bringing aggression under control.

Factors that can place children at risk of becoming a sex offender include abusive experiences and exposure to aggressive role models. Other factors include substance abuse and pornography but these are seen more as disinhibitors than causal influences. A history of physical abuse has been found in 20 to 50% of these youth; a history of sexual abuse has been found in 40 to 80% of abusive children. Higher rates of abuse and sexual victimization are found in prepubescent and young female abusers.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and modeling are both implicated in the occurrence of sex offending. Symptoms of PTSD have been observed in those with sexual behavior disorders, especially those ages 13 and younger and females. Symptoms include recurrent and intrusive recollections of past traumas with increased levels of anger and irritability. Youth who have witnessed or experienced sexual contact may imitate the behavior of the aggressor in their interactions with others.

The presence of maltreatment as a child including; neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse, or any other form of victimization may prove to be precursors or predictors of sexual abuse.

Exposure to aggressive role models in the family is linked to the likelihood of sexually offending as an adolescent. The cumulative effect of exposure to violence, child abuse and neglect can cause a child to turn to sexual offending. Also violence outside the home and in the neighborhood can increase the occurrence of a child engaging in violent and antisocial behaviors.
